Whether you're new to matcha or it's already part of your daily routine, a few small habits can make a big difference.
Over the years, we've had thousands of conversations with our community about everything from morning nausea to the best time of day to enjoy matcha. We've also learned a lot from our farmer partners in Japan and from drinking matcha ourselves every single day. Here are three simple tips we come back to again and again.
1. Don't Drink Matcha on an Empty Stomach
If you've ever felt a little nauseous after your morning matcha, you're not imagining it.
Matcha naturally contains tannins, plant compounds that contribute to its earthy, slightly astringent flavor. For some people, those compounds can irritate the stomach when there's no food to buffer them.
Try this: Enjoy your matcha after breakfast or a light snack. Even something small can help you enjoy its calm, steady energy without the stomach discomfort.
2. Give Your Meals and Matcha a Little Space
Matcha is incredibly rich in beneficial plant compounds, but some of those same compounds can temporarily reduce the absorption of non-heme iron — the type of iron found in many plant-based foods.
This doesn't mean you need to stop drinking matcha. It's simply something to be mindful of if you're working on maintaining healthy iron levels.
Try this: Enjoy your matcha between meals when you can. If you're eating iron-rich plant foods, pairing them with vitamin C can also help support iron absorption.
3. Enjoy It Earlier in the Day
One of the reasons we love matcha is that it provides a calmer, more sustained energy than coffee. But it still contains caffeine, and for some people, drinking it too late in the day can make it harder to unwind at night.
Try this: Make matcha part of your morning or early afternoon ritual. If you're craving something warm later in the day, houjicha (roasted green tea) is one of our favorites — naturally lower in caffeine with a comforting roasted flavor.
Small Changes Can Make a Big Difference
One of the things we love most about matcha is that it isn't about quick fixes — it's about building small rituals that support you over time.
A light breakfast, thoughtful timing, and a little space around meals are simple adjustments, but they can make your daily cup even more enjoyable. We hope these tips help you get even more from every whisk.
