The Basics

What is Matcha?

The word “matcha” actually means “powdered tea” in Japanese. Matcha is the crème de la crème of green tea. Matcha is made from shade-grown, 100% green tea leaves that have been ground into an ultra-fine powder. Traditional green tea is steeped in hot water and then discarded, but matcha is placed directly into water and then fully consumed.

Several weeks prior to the leaves being harvested, the tea bushes are covered to block out direct sunlight. Doing so slows down the growth of the leaves, turning the leaves a darker shade of green and increases the production of amino acids.

Determining Quality

How Do I Determine the Quality of My Matcha?

The simplest way to determine the quality of your matcha is simply by looking at its color. The highest quality matcha will look vibrantly green while lower grades will have a duller appearance with the lowest grades looking brownish green.

How Does Matchaful's Matcha Get So Bright Green? Are There Any Fillings or Color Added?

Matchaful’s matcha contains only one ingredient: 100% organic matcha. Although the colors look almost too bright green not to have any additives, we can assure you that when you buy Matchaful, you are buying only only one ingredient: 100% organic matcha. This is part of the beauty of matcha!

Where Does Matcha Come From?

Matcha is grown across Asia. However, the most famous matcha-producing regions are located in the Shizuoka, Kyoto, Aichi, and Fukuoka prefectures of Japan. Matchaful comes from the Shizuoka and Aichi regions. Shizuoka is highly regarded as the region with the best weather conditions and the richest volanic soil, creating perfect conditions for matcha production.

How Do I Store My Matcha?

We suggest that once opened, that you keep your tin in either your refrigerator or freezer. We at Matchaful choose to keep our tins in the freezer as the lower temperatures help to preserve the freshness the longest. Once you've opened your tin, you should consume the tea within 3 months for optimal freshness.
