Japanese Kazuho Whisk

Made in Takayama, Ikoma City, Nara Prefecture, Japan

This traditional Kazuho-style white bamboo tea whisk (chasen) is made by Chikumeido Sabun, a 24th-generation family-run tea whisk manufacturer in Takayama, Nara Prefecture, Japan. Each whisk is hand-carved from a single piece of 100% natural, chemical-free locally grown bamboo. All Chikumeido products are handmade by skilled craftsmen under the guidance of the head of the temple, Mr. Kubo Sabun, who currently serves as Chairman of the Takayama Chasen Traditional Craftsmen Association.

Located in the northwest region of the Nara Prefecture, the small village of Takayama is known as the most prized area for chasen production—the trade has been passed down by local families for over 500 years since the Muromachi period (1336-1573). Compared to Chinese chasen, Japanese chasen are lighter with thinner, more flexible tines. This makes them both more durable and creates an easier, more enjoyable whisking experience.

Originally crafted for the Urasenke school of Japanese tea ceremony, this whisk also makes a wonderful daily tool.


How It's Made

Step 1: Katagi - Owari

Cut the stripped raw bamboo in half with a large split knife

Split the stripped bamboo into splines to make the tip

Separate each piece into skin and meat with a kitchen knife and remove the meat

Step 4: Kowari - Kowari

Split each tine into 10 pieces, alternating thin and thick weights to create 160 equal tines

Step 5: Cut into Small Pieces

Carefully tear apart the individual tines using your hands

Step 6: Cut into Small Pieces

80 thick tines make up the outside ring and 80 thin tines make up the inner

Step 7: Ajikezuri

Boil the tip and carefully shave it to taper toward the tip

Step 8: Ajikomi - Shaving

It is said that the flavor of the tea changes depending on the shavings' flavor—this is the most difficult step in the process

Step 9: Seasoning - Squeezing

Once shaved to the proper thickness, the tines are ironed to curve inwards

Step 10: Chamfer

Both corners of the thick tines are thinly shaved and woven with cotton thread so that the tea does not stick to them

Step 11: Part 2

The thick tine that was opened in the lower layer is further woven two times to reinforce the base

Adjust the height of the inner and outer tines to adjust the overall shape and complete the Takayama tea whisk

Matcha is an antioxidant powerhouse. On the ORAC scale (oxygen radical absorbance capacity – a measure of the antioxidant capacity of food), it surpasses all other antioxidant-rich foods including blueberries, pomegranates, and dark chocolate.

The antioxidants in matcha are made up of 60% catechin polyphenols – the most potent antioxidant. Catechins offer protection against many kinds of cancer, helping to prevent heart disease, reduce cholesterol, and slow the process of aging. The most important and abundant polyphenol in matcha is EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate) – the same polyphenol found in all green teas.

L-Theanine, an amino acid found in matcha, combines with caffeine to create increased focused and sustained energy throughout the day. L-Theanine has been hailed for relaxing the brain, muscles, and blood vessels.     Orders over $65 and subscriptions ship for free! Orders under $65 have a $5 flat rate shipping fee. Depending on your order value and destination, your order will either ship by USPS First Class/Priority or UPS Ground.

    Matchaful ships to anywhere in the U.S., including U.S. territories. Currently, international shipping is not offered, but we hope to soon.

  • Returns & Exchanges

    Returns and exchanges are offered within 30 days of purchase on non-perishable items. Note, matcha and housemade snacks are considered perishable barring any item defect and therefore not eligible for return or exchange. Items marked as final sale are non-returnable.

  • How does the Subscription Program work?

    If you love discounts and don't want to have to remember to place your regular matcha order, our Subscription Program was made for you!

    You will receive a 10% discount on every single order and free shipping. That's a total discount of up to $12 a month.

    Terms and Conditions:
    There is a 2-order minimum fulfilled order on all subscriptions. By starting a monthly subscription, you agree to this policy.

    Other helpful information:

    • Your subscription orders will be automatically placed on the same day of the month you began your subscription. For example, if you started your subscription on January 3rd, your order will be automatically placed on the 3rd of each month or every other month (whichever interval you specified).

    • You will be charged when the order is placed.

    • If you know in advance you won't be needing matcha for awhile, or aren't ready for your next order, you can select a new date for delivery.

    • So long as your monthly order has not already been processed, you can cancel at any time (after the 2-order minimum) via your account, or by dropping us a quick email to and we'll remove the subscription for you.

    • Once your monthly subscription order has been processed, we cannot intercept or cancel orders. If you need to make changes to or cancel your order, including updating the shipping address, please update via your account or email us at at least 2-3 days in advance of your order date.
