Matcha Latte: A Deep Dive into the Plant Milks at Matchaful

Matcha Latte: A Deep Dive into the Plant Milks at Matchaful

Traditionally, matcha is prepared from two ingredients: matcha and hot water. While the “straight up” has its loyal fans, the most popular matcha preparation at our cafés is the matcha latte—made with different plant milks. It is somewhat unclear who’s responsible for adding milk to matcha. Internet sources point to a chain of coffeeshops testing it first on the Japanese market and then worldwide in the early 2000s.

From the beginning, Matchaful has operated with a plant-based philosophy, serving strictly dairy-free milks at our cafés. Over the years, we’ve worked with many different plant milks and even started making our own when we couldn’t find an option that satisfied our taste buds. Recently, we teamed up with Numilk and are excited to share that we are now making four organic plant milks in-house: oat, almond, coconut, and cashew. Our goal is to transition completely to fresh, housemade milks in the near future. Learn more about the benefits and nutritional differences of our plant milks below.

Housemade Oat Milk

Thanks to its creamy texture, oat milk has quickly become the most popular milk alternative. It’s also nice that oat milk scores high on the sustainability scale and adds some valuable fiber to our diet. Our housemade version is made with filtered water, organic oats, organic sunflower oil, and pink Himalayan salt.

Housemade Almond Milk

Whenever we want something a little lighter than oat, almond milk is our go-to. It is made from filtered water, organic almonds, and pink Himalayan salt. This milk has a light mouthfeel and low calorie count. We also offer a slightly sweetened version with maple syrup.

Housemade Coconut Milk

Coconut milk is closest to dairy in regards to macronutrients and a creamy, rich mouthfeel. It has a beautiful and intense tropical flavor. Like coconut water, the milk contains balancing electrolytes that support all body functions.

Housemade Cashew Milk

Our newest addition is a milk made from the slightly sweet and buttery cashew seed. Housemade cashew milk scores higher in protein content than other plant milks and contains healthy unsaturated fats. Our housemade cashew milk contains filtered water, organic cashews, and pink Himalayan salt.

Macadamia Milk

Macadamia is native to Australia. The treenut is a rare source of plant-based omega fatty acids. The brand we use is also fortified with the essential vitamin B12, which is often hard to come by on a plant-based diet.

Our housemade milks are available for purchase at our cafés both by the bottle and in your drink. All of our matcha lattes, as well as our creative specials, can be made with the plant-based milk of your choice. If you are unsure, go with our recommendation or discuss the options with your matcharista. We’re happy to help!
